The Benefits of Teaching Tolerance to Children at Home & in School If you are wondering if teaching racial and religious tolerance is appropriate for children of a young age, it most assuredly is. In fact, the best places to do it is a combination of at home and at school. It is never too soon to start teaching tolerance to young kids.
Diversity In Life
Children need to learn that they will encounter diversity in life and that this is a good thing. Everyone can learn from those who belong to a different race or religion than them. By teaching your children or students tolerance, you are also teaching them that it is okay to be different from others and that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
Notice Depictions
Take note of what cultures and religions are depicted in the classroom or what is discussed or learned about at home. Children are like sponges when they are young and are eager to learn about all manner of things. This means that they are much less likely to have prejudices in them.
Foster Pride
Another great reason to engage in teaching tolerance to children is that it fosters pride in who they are and where they came from in terms of culture and ethnicity. Tolerance allows children to gain new friends and learn about ways of doing things that they normally may never be exposed to.
